6% of the CNA exam · blueprint NNAAP Written (Oral) Examination Content Outline, effective April 2024

Short answer

Four of the 60 scored items. This area is about the boundaries of the nurse aide role: working under the supervision of a licensed nurse, what may and may not be delegated, the reporting relationships that make delegation safe, and the rule that a trainee performs no service they have not been trained in and found proficient at.

Why it matters on this exam

Four items directly, but scope-of-practice reasoning decides the keyed answer in far more than four. Whenever a question ends with an action, the boundary of the role is usually what separates the right answer from the plausible one.

Key concepts

Common mistakes

Worked example

A resident's family asks an aide to adjust the flow on an oxygen regulator. The aide has not been trained in it and it is not within the role. The correct answer is to decline the task politely and inform the licensed nurse — both halves matter. Section 483.152(a)(4)(i) bars performing untrained services, and the reporting duty is what turns a refusal into safe care rather than an unmet need.

Original practice questions

Member of the Health Care TeamDifficulty 3/5

A family member asks an aide to perform a task the aide has not been trained in. What should the aide do?

  1. AAsk another aide to perform the task on the family's behalf
  2. BDecline the task and inform the licensed nurse of the request
  3. CAttempt the task carefully because the family has requested it
  4. DDecline the task and take no further action about the request
Show answer and rationale

Correct: B. Section 483.152(a)(4)(i) bars performing services one has not been trained in and found proficient at. Declining is half the answer; reporting is what turns a refusal into safe care.

  • C — Who asks does not change the training and proficiency requirement.
  • D — Declining silently leaves the underlying need unmet and the nurse unaware.
  • A — Passing an untrained task to a colleague does not make it appropriately delegated.

Who administers and evaluates the skills demonstration under federal rule?

  1. AThe director of nursing at the facility where the candidate is employed
  2. BAny certified nurse aide with at least three years of continuous experience
  3. CA registered nurse with at least one year caring for the elderly or chronically ill
  4. DA licensed practical nurse with at least two years in long-term care nursing
Show answer and rationale

Correct: C. Section 483.154(c)(4)(ii) sets exactly this requirement. It is distinct from the trainer requirement at 483.152(a)(5)(i), which is an RN with two years' experience including one in long-term care.

  • D — The rule names a registered nurse for the skills evaluation, not an LPN.
  • A — A facility director of nursing is barred from performing the actual training.
  • B — Experience as a nurse aide does not qualify a person to evaluate the demonstration.
