Spiritual and Cultural Needs

2% of the CNA exam · blueprint NNAAP Written (Oral) Examination Content Outline, effective April 2024

Short answer

One of the 60 scored items and the smallest area on the exam. It covers respecting a resident's spiritual practices and cultural background and supporting them in care — dietary observances, religious articles and practices, the resident's preferred language and customs, and family involvement, without the aide substituting their own beliefs.

Why it matters on this exam

One item. Two percent. Read this page once and spend your time on Basic Nursing Skills, which is twenty-one items.

It is worth the one read because the answers here are highly predictable, so a single item is close to free.

Common mistakes

Worked example

A resident asks for privacy at a particular time each day for prayer, which cuts across the aide's usual bathing round. The scored answer is to accommodate the request and adjust the schedule, reporting the change as needed. Section 483.152(b)(7)(ii) requires promoting the resident's right to make personal choices to accommodate their needs, and the routine exists to serve the resident rather than the other way round.

Original practice questions

  • C — Tidying a resident's belongings away without asking disregards both possession and practice.
  • D — A resident's personal property does not become facility property.
  • A — A personal article is not treated as an infection risk to be confiscated.
